At P’Nut Asian Kitchen, we are passionate about not only serving delicious street food but also about doing our part to protect our planet. This World Environment Day, June 5th, we are excited to spotlight our commitment to sustainability through our compostable packaging. Partnering with BioPak, we ensure that every meal you enjoy from P’Nut comes with a lesser environmental impact.
Why Compostable Packaging Matters:
Our planet is facing unprecedented environmental challenges, from plastic pollution to deforestation and climate change. The food industry, particularly takeout and delivery services, contributes significantly to these issues due to the widespread use of fossil fuel-based single-use plastics. By choosing packaging made from plants, we aim to reduce our reliance on virgin fossil plastic and impact on materials scarcity, lower our carbon footprint, and promote a sustainable future.
Our Sustainable Packaging Choices:
At P’Nut, we use a range of compostable packaging options sourced from BioPak, a leader in sustainable packaging solutions. Here’s how our packaging makes a difference.
Responsibly Sourced, Rapidly Renewable and Recyclable Materials:
We use packaging made from post-consumer recycled FSC™ certified paper and paperboard. These materials can be either composted or recycled again after use (if not too dirty), helping to close the loop and reduce the demand for virgin resources. The Forest Stewardship Council™️(FSCTM) certification ensures the wood and paper are sourced from responsibly managed forests – taking into account sustainability measures like water use, energy use, community support and the end product’s overall environmental rating.
Some of our packaging is made from bagasse (also known as sugarcane pulp). Bagasse is the fibrous substance that remains after the sugarcane plant is harvested for its juice. BioPak turns this agricultural byproduct into packaging that looks just like moulded cardboard.
Bags:
Our bags are made from post-consumer recycled FSC™ certified paper. They are reusable, recyclable in kerbside recycling, and suitable for home and industrial composting.
Paper Containers:
Our paper containers are sustainably sourced and made from FSC™ certified paperboard. They are lined with a water-based, waterproof coating and are soon to be certified home compostable to AS5810 Australian Standards. There is no added PFAS in our paper containers.
Forks and Chopsticks:
Made from sustainably sourced FSC™ 100% certified birchwood, our cutlery is compostable, making it a more sustainable alternative to plastic forks.
Spoons:
Our spoons are made from rapidly renewable sugarcane pulp, a by-product of the sugar refining industry. This cutlery is certified home compostable to Australian AS5810 standards, with no added PFAS.
Napkins:
Our napkins are made from FSC™ certified paper pulp. These disposable napkins are recyclable (if not too soiled) and home compostable.
While not all our packaging is currently plant-based, we are continually seeking improvements to enhance our sustainability.
The Impact Of Our Choices:
Switching to compostable packaging has several positive outcomes:
Reduced Plastic Waste:
By eliminating single-use plastics made from fossil fuels, we significantly reduce our reliance on finite fossil resources. Using packaging made from reclaimed and rapidly renewable plant materials helps reduce our impact on material scarcity, biodiversity and climate change.
Lower Carbon Footprint:
Renewable and recycled materials often require less energy to produce than traditional plastics, resulting in lower greenhouse gas emissions. Compostable packaging is made from materials that are designed to re-enter the resource stream as a nutrient-rich compost, which can improve our soil and sequester carbon from the atmosphere.
Supporting Circular Economy:
Compostable and recyclable packaging helps support a circular economy, where materials are continuously repurposed rather than discarded.
Celebrating World Environment Day:
World Environment Day is a global platform for raising awareness and taking action on pressing environmental issues. This year’s theme, “Land Restoration, Desertification & Drought Resilience” aligns perfectly with our ongoing efforts to minimize our environmental impact. By choosing P’Nut Asian Kitchen, you are not only indulging in flavorful dishes but also contributing to a more sustainable planet.
